Who's afraid of David Lynch?

Have i mentioned how much I Love David Lynch? Probably.
Recently I bought Twin Peaks: Fire walk with me.
I watched it with my husband, and hes not too much of a Lynch fan, some of it he shakes his head at.
I understand his ideas can come off too artsy fartsy, but to me Lynch is nothing but sincere and in no way contrived.
His works all feel pure and honest.  Its the kind of art you can feel, and it makes you want to know more.
I like art that needs no explanation in order for you to like what your looking at.
Not saying it has to be easy, but if you cant feel something, then whats the point.

some of his paintings

"boy lights fire"

"This Man Was Shot"

"Rat Meat Bird"

this piece David took a piece of meat and left it outside so maggots and bugs will invade it. Then placed it on a canvas, with a dead rat. Why do I like this? Maybe I feel David can do no wrong in art. Whatever.

David was a painter first, but wanted his works to "move", so he got into film making
ever seen this?

this is one of his first films.
It was inspired by his wife's niece, who one night in her sleep kept reciting the alphabet in a "tormented" way.
In a way its how I see his work, dream like. Why did his niece do this in her sleep? Who knows, but its those subconscious things that arise in his work, pure and straight from the source.

anyway, Im pretty excited to start work on my first Lynch tribute piece.

where are you going?

"He says that behind my eyes Im hiding
and he tells me, i pushed him away, that my heart has been hard to find
there must be something here
there must be something here
...............................................................
I know your late for your next parade
you came to make sure that Im not running
well I ran from him
 in all kinds of ways
guess it was his turn this time

time
thought I made friends with time
thought wed be flying
well maybe not this time

****

last night I dreamt I was drunk. I dont drink. But I got drunk and I accidentally killed a little man who lived inside a jack in the box. I didnt know he was in there and threw the box in a drunken state. I opened the box and this little dead shriveled man fell out. I felt horrible.

lately I can remember my dreams pretty well. they have been very vivid, Ive been drawing some out. One day I'll paint a collection of just dreams.

Ryden

here is the full image for one of my pieces for "Homage"

"Bunnies, Bee's, Meat, Mark"
18x24 - oil on canvas

I remember the first time I seen Mark Ryden's work.
It was the cover for "4 non blondes" album "Bigger, Better, Faster, More" and I just would look at the album art and think, man this is great! I had no idea who the artist was, and didnt really look into it.
But I was 13 and  just started to use oils at the time so even before I knew who he was his work inspired me.
So it was kinda cool when I saw the rest of Marks work years later then realized it was his work on that album cover.

I dont think I have to explain why Marks work is inspiring to me.
I know he was and is a big inspiration to a lot of artists.
And even if you dont like the subject matter, you cant deny his talent.

Homage opens February 17 at Rivers Edge Gallery.

on the mend

I had a nice conversation with a friend today. He said I sound in good spirits, and I have to say I am.
All the resting and reevaluating worked. Im feeling back to normal and better than I was before.

well anyway on too painting matters.
Ive been working on a couple pieces for a show going on here in Detroit, at Rivers Edge Gallery.
The show is called "Homage" and they asked artists to pay tribute to artists who have inspired them. It was tough to choose! but I picked 2, I wont say who yet. But here is a sneak peak of a WIP.

Im sure some of you will guess this one!

Still a lot of work to do on both.
I also started some pieces for an upcoming anniversary show @ Gallery 1988 and a 2 person show Im having with one of my favorite Detroit artist.

also
I got to say how much Ive been enjoying Bjorks latest album!
If you dont have it yet and your a fan you need to get it. Its brillant!

Hello stranger

Things continue to be quite.
I guess this is going to take longer than I imagined.
2011 did a number on me, and recovery is what I need...apparently.

Im still steadily painting..its the only thing I want to do, besides playing scrabble of course.
I feel like Im in a cocoon. This all feels easy and natural, and Im lucky to have wonderful friends and a great family who understands and have been helpful.

anyway, 2012 looks great to me.
lots of great shows lined up for the year and great things are shaping up for next year too!

Hunger Force

So here is my piece for the Adult Swim show

"Hunger Force" 16x20 - oil on canvas

Aqua teen will always remind me of my son.  When he was pretty young we would watch the show with friends, and he would always do that little rap in the beginning.  He even has a knit Meatwad beanie, that he still wears. But we had to stop watching it when we thought he might be finally able to understand the dialogue. haha

Some of the stuff I end up painting makes me laugh. I think to myself " Im sitting here in all seriousness painting a meatball with a face"

The show opens Friday the 13th ooOOoooOO spooky
